Native American Studies – Reflections
Ringggg, ding, ding, ding goes the bell. Sixth hour - last class, and I'm fortunate enough to be able to join the Native American Studies group for a day. This group is made up of mostly Native American high school students, a few white students, and one hispanic student.We all head down to the computer lab where the librarian graciously welcomes the class in. Their first quest is to write one paragraph about a series they had just previewed, entitled Into The West. The series portrays tales from the American West in the 19th century, told from the perspective of two families, one of white settlers and one of Native Americans. Not that anyone would notice, but I kind of like my rose colored glasses. Ten years ago maybe not, but today - you bet. I look at the world around me and I find myself at times wanting to shut it out. Being a normally happy-go-lucky person, saying I want to shut the world out is a big statement for me. Down the Rabbit Hole
As teens, we all needed validation for our actions. Especially those actions that lead to some form of academic success. The truth, if fully known, was that as a teenager, that path was often riveted with rabbit holes. Many times in the process of learning, our foot would slip and down we would go. The best thing we could hope for was a caring/forgiving teacher waiting for us at the end of that hole, to help us get back up on our feet again.
