When The Past Becomes The Guide
When The Past Becomes The Guide People tend to rely on the past as a means to prepare for the future. While it is true we need to learn from our mistakes, are we allowing the past to control our future? Picking a time in my past that was riddled with mistakes and completely altered my life course, I ponder on how things could have gone differently. We tend to focus only on the negative and often times allow that negativity to guide our present and future decisions. Unfortunately, this way of thinking doesn’t help us resolve the conflicts or problems that haunt our memories. If we use the past…
Overcoming our fears – on the ledge
Trait theory is focused on recognizing and assessing individual personality characteristics. Fear is a trait. In talking with a young college student just recently, I learned that she is preparing to present to a group of kids who are incarcerated in a regional detention center in our area. She was trying to determine which methods to use to teach these students about learning, and now asking “questions” is specific to all things in life. At first she was going to use the analogy of a McDonalds Big Mac with Coke and Fries, versus a kid’s burger with no condiments on it, as a representation of future goals of the good…

Work after the kids leave home The way we spend our time has a great deal to do with the people in our lives. That can be with a significant other, children, adult parents, friends, co-workers, and even our pets. Yes, those adorable goldfish swimming around have a true purpose in our lives. You get up in the morning and before you have even combed your hair, you are feeding the fish, checking their bubbler, and changing the light settings. They create your first distraction of the day – you are their grocery cart. For those who have raised children (that’s a step up from goldfish), you understand distraction in…
Power is not necessarily a position -Power is gained by knowledge.
That old saying “people who live in glass houses shouldn’t throw rocks ” – it still resonates today. From whatever authority you were given a position for, that same authority has the power to take it away just as quickly. There are those individuals who for whatever reason, seem to take their position too far. They are high above the clouds – lofty and untouchable. Then it happens – the Big Bang! Bang! There is a big difference in philosophies when it comes to experiencing failure. One person will perceive failure as another opportunity to try again. The next person might perceive failure as the fault of everyone around them, and attempt to…
